New Jersey Institute of Technology Goes Green with SunMaxx Solar

Thanks to $1.6 million in funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA), installation of energy efficient and renewable energy technologies was recently completed at the New Jersey Institute of Technology’s Oak Residence Hall. The project was approved by the New Jersey Board of Public Utilities and the U.S. Department of Energy as one of seven projects in the $20.6 million State Energy Program funded by ARRA. SunMaxx Solars ThermoPower VHP 30 Evacuated Tubes at the Brian C. Nevin Welcome Center

In September 2009, SunMaxx Solar was pleased to provide the evacuated tube solar collectors for the Brian C. Nevin Welcome Center on the Cornell University Campus.  Under the direction of M/E Engineering, who were responsible for the mechanical design, the welcome center used 8 ThermoPower evacuated tubes from SunMaxx Solar, which they roof mounted.  The collectors are connected to the building’s hot water system and the heating system for the building is primarily in floor hot water radiant heat.

SunMaxx Solar Installation at Kuhns Bros. Log Homes Inc.

In February 2012, Dave Brugge completed the installation of a solar thermal system at Kuhns Bros. Log Homes Incorporated in Frewsburg, NY.   The installation included 1 ThermoPower VHP-30 and two ThermoPower VHP-20 solar collectors as well as a 280 gallon solar storage tank.   The solar system provides both hot water and heating for the building with a solar fraction of approximately 65%.  This new solar thermal system replaced the previous propane forced air furnace and electric hot water.

How Do I Balance The Flow of My Collectors?  I have 2 arrays of 6. Use balancing valves, 1 on the cold side for each array. This will allow you to adjust the flow in each array and optimize your collectors output. SunMaxx Solar Thermal System Installed at Vanillen Dairy in Ovid, NY

During February of 2012, a commercial solar thermal system was installed for the Vanillen Dairy in Ovid, New York.   The system uses five ThermoPower VHP-30 solar collectors, roof mounted, along with a 211 gallon solar storage tank.  The system was installed to provide both domestic hot water and heating and is tied into their existing propane hot water tank and boiler.   The system provides 100% of the domestic hot water needs from late Spring through early Autumn and 75%  of the domestic hot water and radiant floor heating from late Autumn through early Spring.

During March of 2012, a residential solar thermal system was installed for Mike Beres of Springville, New York.   His system uses two ThermoPower VHP20 solar collectors which are ground mounted, as well as an 80 gallon solar storage tank.  The system provides 95% of his domestic hot water needs from late Spring through early Autumn and 80% from late Autumn through early Spring.  The system tank has an electric element and tied into a 40 gallon propane hot water tank and wood boiler.  He took advantage of the $4000 from NYSERDA’s Solar Thermal Incentive Program.

The collectors are roof mounted and provide approx. 75% of the businesses domestic hot water needs.  The new system ties into two gas hot water tanks (1 at 40G and the other at 50G).   They took advantage of the Solar Thermal Incentive Program through NYSERDA and saved $25,000.
